I first noticed Jay Brannen in the movie Holding Trevor. His character Jake performed a song in the film. Although I thought the song was okay, I loved Jay's voice and decided to see if I could find any other music he recorded.
I quicky found Goddamned on Amazon and purched it right away. The songs on the album are amazing and Jay's voice is beautiful. I have not stop playing it since it arrived.
Most of the album is Jay and his guitar with the occasional piano or violin. The music allows Jay's voice to shine. Great album.

"Why don't the gideons leave condoms in the drawer?
Bibles don't save many people anymore
We took up quarters in the bathroom
There were dollars on the floor
I looked at you, you said to me,
"jay, we're worth more" ('Home')
Where does this kid get off being so damned sexy and talented to boot. I fell in love with him in 'Shortbus', then his song on the soundtrack album stood out - after I recovered from the achingly beautiful Scott Matthew tunes. Then I YouTubed him, really just hoping to see him with his shirt off again, and found is songs. Delicate, beautiful and well crafted, they totally defied my expectations.
One problem, so many songs about heartache and heartbreak. Really? How does someone like Jay not be permanently loved? I'm sure he's never short of dates... Still, it's that combination of beauty and hearttbreak that makes this release so special. The intricacies of Jay's writing, the purity of his sweet voice almost has me believing he is indeed a lonely boy pining for love.
Highlights include:
- At First Sight ("Your text messages were like no-calorie food for my soul")
- American Idol ("Am i suicidal, or am i hungry...")
- String-A-Long Song ("You could see the sin and the sadness
And taste the gin and the madness
on my lips, and in my eyes well")
- Home ("Count down in Hollywood
Roasting letters from your father
We proved survival of the "why bother"
Beautiful songs that will ear-worm you with it's pitch perfect vocals and charming, clever lyrics. Highly recommended.

First saw Jay Brannan in Shortbus and loved his vocals and the song Soda Shop. Googled him later and found a whole body of work I could become a fan of - and the great thing is reckon there's more to come.
Great voice and really intelligent artist.

I generally listen to more rock or electronic music, but Jay Brannan's goddamned is great. My favorite tracks are housewife and can't have it all.
